Ms Peta Jeppesen has combined her experiences as a teacher, principal, and mother to create a set of pillars to provide grounding when feeling overwhelmed.
Foundations – without them, we come crumbling down.
Direction – even drifting slightly off-course can yield disastrous results over a period of time.
What happens when we become discombobulated and out of alignment with our true self?
How well do you holistically perform when you feel overwhelmed?
And if you’ve found yourself lost in the weeds, how do you find your way back home?
Ms Peta Jeppesen of Beyond The Classroom Australia spent years reflecting on these questions while seeking a solution that could impact the lives of her staff and students. After combing through her experiences as a teacher, principal, and mother, she compiled her wisdom into Peta’s Pillars of Success.
These four pillars serve as a grounding reference point for conscious reflection and self actualisation. Each pillar simplifies areas of accountability that Peta has deduced are necessary for reconnecting with our true self and coming back to our “why”.
During her time teaching, Peta felt constant stress and anxiety that would lead to burnout. She, and her coworkers, struggled every day to remember why they became teachers, and was it really worth working through the impossible expectations within a limited system. More times than not, support was in short supply. Peta found it difficult to organise her time and priorities, fell behind on deadlines, and felt burdened by her workload.
Peta witnessed her students were lacking self awareness and had few, if any, tools for managing their emotions. She later realised as principal, neither did her fellow teachers. It seemed everyone around her in school was losing heart, and hope.
And so, the pillars were birthed into creation:
- Rest – giving time to your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Here lies self-reflection and self regulation. Have you had enough time to nurture your needs?
- Play – using imagination to reflect on our beliefs and processing systems. What are your values? Where are your boundaries? What are your beliefs and are they limiting you?
- Create – connecting with your purpose to promote ‘outside the box’ goals. If your goal is to raise emotional intelligence within your students, what are some creative avenues or activities you can think of to implement in the classroom?
- Innovate – taking action to move toward goals. Embodiment – how can you integrate what you’ve learned from the other pillars? What is your next right action?
These are the systems Peta relies on for calibration within her 1-1 coaching and Dare to Be a Rockstar programs. With these tools serving as a high performance guidebook, Peta is able to engage with clients in a personable way. Meanwhile, the pillars help catalyse an internal inquiry where clients can learn to manage challenging times more efficiently, come back to the present moment, and reconnect to their hearts.
