Details of a new strategy for international education are to include a transport fare concession scheme, something for which international students have long agitated.
States and territories apart from NSW and Victoria give international students access to the full range of concessions available to their domestic counterparts. However, Victoria appears to have mimicked NSW in restricting its discount to long-term tickets.
The NSW concession arrangements, announced a year ago, only apply to three and twelve-month tickets for travel in the greater Sydney region. The Australian understands that the Victorian concessions will include regional areas covered by the Myki smartcard system, but will only apply to annual tickets.
The scheme will be piloted for three years, starting in 2015.
